About Taka Bonerate National Park

Taka Bonerate National Park is located in the Selayar Islands Regency of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It features the third-largest atoll in the world, covering over 500,000 hectares of marine and terrestrial environments. The park encompasses numerous small islands, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves, making it a strikingly diverse ecosystem. It was established in 1992 to conserve these unique habitats and the endangered species that rely on them. The park is especially famous for its pristine coral reefs, which support a vibrant assemblage of marine life including sea turtles, manta rays, sharks, and more than 250 species of coral. Key recreation opportunities include world-class snorkeling and scuba diving that allow visitors to experience vibrant underwater landscapes teeming with fish and coral diversity. The park is also important culturally as it is home to local communities that depend on its resources for fishing and sustainable tourism. Visitors can explore remote islands, swim alongside abundant marine fauna, and enjoy beach camping on white sandy shores.
